5 Ways to Fancy-Up A Dollar (Part Two)

Fancy Up A Dollar Part Two

Last week was part one of “5 Ways to Fancy Up a Dollar” & now today we’re concluding with the last 3 items in our dollar store challenge. Just for a recap, here’s the challenge: To fancy up a dollar with my mad crafting skills by going to the dollar store & making those dollar store finds into something I would have paid so much more for at a Target or Home Goods.

The random dollar store finds were:

  1. Bamboo basket
  2. Wire wastebasket
  3. Random book
  4. Hanging basket
  5. Glass Vase

Last week I showed you what I did with the bamboo basket & glass vase. So this week, I’m going to show you what I did with the wire wastebasket, random book, & hanging basket. Ready, set, craft!

Jute Wastebasket

Fancy Up A Dollar Part Two

Turn a regular white wire wastebasket into a hand woven jute basket!

Note: This is a bit of a time consuming project, so I suggest you grab a few snacks & get Netflix going to help the time go by.

What you’ll need:

  • Dollar Store Wire Basket
  • Natural Jute Rope

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Cut long strands of jute and reinforce the edges with tape
  2. Begin to weave the jute as in & out of the holes in the basket (like you’re weaving a basket!)

  3. When you reach an end to one rope, start with another one. Make sure you keep the ends of each rope on the inside of the basket
  4. After a couple of hours (depending on your attention span), you have a beautiful hand woven waste basket!

Book Accent Balls

Turn a random book from the dollar store into beautiful book balls that serve perfectly as accent details for any room!

  • Flower Punch
  • Hot glue & gun
  • Foam ball
  • Pen

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Tear out pages from the book you’ve chosen at the dollar store
  2. Using a flower punch, punch out lots & lots of petals.
  3. Once you’ve got a good stack, take a pen and place the base at the center of the punched out flower. Fold up the flower as pictured below.
  4. At the base of the molded flower, add just a little bit of hot glue & quickly adhere it to the foam ball.
  5. Continue these steps until the whole ball is covered. Place the petals close together for a fuller look.
  6. Use these book balls as in accent piece in a coffee table basket, on top of a candle holder, or by themselves next to a lamp or vase!

Wall Fruit Basket

Turn a garden hanging basket into a wall basket for your fruit to free up space on the kitchen counters!

What you’ll need:

  • Dollar store hanging basket (found in the spring gardening section)
  • Spray paint (optional)
  • Wire cutters
  • 2 small J-Hooks

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Remove the chains that hang the basket
  2. Use the wire cutters to cut the basket in half. Confession: I cut  it the wrong way, therefore, I only was able to make one hanging basket. But if you cut it the right way, you’ll be able to make two.
  3. Once you cut the basket it half, spray paint it. This is totally optional based on if you’re fine with just a black basket!
  4. Once the paint is dry, select the area where you want to hang your basket & screw in the hooks into the wall.
  5. Once the hooks are securely in the wall, hang the baskets on the hooks & wa-la!!
